Malaysia’s industrial output climbs five per cent in June

KUALA LUMPUR (XINHUA) – Malaysia’s industrial production index (IPI) climbed by five per cent year on year in June, sustaining a positive momentum for six consecutive months, official data showed on Friday.

The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said in a statement that the output growth in the manufacturing sector led the growth, with an increase of 5.2 per cent. Meanwhile, the month also saw a turnaround to 4.9 per cent in the production of the mining sector.

The electricity sector rose by 3.5 per cent. In comparison to the previous month, the IPI went up by 4.8 per cent. For the second quarter, the IPI advanced by 4.5 per cent. The uptick was driven by the manufacturing sector at a 4.9 per cent growth.

Meanwhile, the IPI for the mining and electricity sectors grew modestly by 2.4 per cent and 5.3 per cent respectively. The IPI, however, dropped by 1.2 per cent against the first quarter, influenced by a decline in the mining sector.

In the meantime, throughout the first six months this year, the IPI improved by 3.9 per cent on year with all sectors posting an expansion.
