KUALA LUMPUR (BERNAMA) – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has consistently championed ASEAN’s strengths and advantages on the global stage, further solidifying Malaysia’s role as ASEAN 2025 chair and driving regional prosperity.
Senior Political Secretary to the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin, said Anwar’s leadership across global political and economic platforms will significantly benefit ASEAN.
“During a 12-day trip with the Prime Minister from the UAE to the World Economic Forum 2025 in Davos, Switzerland, he frequently emphasised Malaysia’s pivotal role in securing meaningful outcomes for ASEAN.
“One such example is the ASEAN Energy Grid, a mega project involving nearly nine countries. This initiative demands not only financial investment but also human capital, technical expertise, and resources in renewable energy, which will ultimately benefit the region,” Shamsul added during a recent appearance on Ruang Bicara Aspirasi Ekonomi, hosted by Shuhadah Armawan on Bernama TV.
Speaking on the topic ‘2025: Year of Opportunity or Economic Pressure?’, he addressed how Malaysia is preparing to face global challenges, including the US-China trade war, given the nation’s reliance on exports.
Shamsul said these challenges are mitigated through Anwar’s proactive engagement and understanding.
“When we speak of engagement, it means he is unafraid to meet and collaborate with world leaders. As ASEAN Chair, he has cultivated close ties with regional leaders, frequently engaging with them directly, including through personal calls. This reflects the strong relationship and mutual understanding between ASEAN leaders and Malaysia,” he said.
He also highlighted the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ) as an important initiative under Anwar’s leadership, transforming the country’s economic landscape.
The cooperation signals openness between the two nations, which is expected to foster trade, investment, and cross-border business opportunities for Malaysia and Singapore.
Shamsul commended the Prime Minister’s outspoken stance on global issues, such as his unwavering support for Palestine, which has elevated Malaysia’s position in international diplomacy.
“The Prime Minister’s leadership is forward-looking and decisive, firmly articulating Malaysia’s position, while also inviting global partners to explore business and investment opportunities in the country,” he said.
