Make our roads friendly to new drivers with ‘P’ plates

Driving is a skill that comes with time, experience and practice. However, every new driver on the road faces a learning curve that can sometimes lead to uncertainty, hesitation or mistake.

This is why many countries have implemented a system where probationary drivers are required to display a “P” sign or licence plate on their cars for a designated period. It is a system designed to benefit both new drivers and the general public, and I believe it is time for Brunei to follow suit.

First, it helps experienced drivers recognise and accommodate new drivers, who may still be adjusting to the complexities of the road. Seeing a “P” plate signals the need for extra patience and care, which can reduce the likelihood of accidents caused by inexperience.

Second, it aids law enforcement in monitoring compliance with driving regulations. In other countries, fines for not displaying a “P” plate ensure that new drivers adhere to safety standards, thereby maintaining accountability.

Third, it promotes a safer driving environment by creating awareness and encouraging responsible behaviour among both new and experienced drivers. This proactive approach could lead to few road mishaps and a more supportive driving culture.

The authorities should implement the policy to enhance road safety and support new drivers. With proven success elsewhere, these “P” plates could be a valuable addition to the country’s road safety measures.
