Members of the public can experience unique Kedayan tradition and activities at the ‘Pesta Makan Tahun Pantai Siandang Kampong Jerudong’ festival, launched yesterday.
Deputy Permanent Secretary at the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism Noralinda binti Haji Ibrahim officiated the event on behalf of the Minister of Primary Resources and Tourism Dato Seri Setia Dr Haji Abdul Manaf bin Haji Metussin.
The three-day festival at Siandang Beach Kampong Jerudong is a collaborative effort between the Kampong Jerudong ‘B’ Consultative Council, Kampong Jerudong ‘A’ Consultative Council and Jerudong Kedayan Heritage Association (WARISAN), with the support of the Brunei-Muara District Office.
Kampong Jerudong ‘B’ Acting Village Head Kamis bin Panjang explained the significance of the Makan Tahun tradition. He said, “It’s an age-old custom celebrated after the rice harvest. It symbolises gratitude for a bountiful harvest and seeks blessings for future harvests.”
He also clarified the naming of Siandang Beach: “The executive members of the Jerudong Village unanimously agreed to name this area Siandang Beach Kampong Jerudong, as it’s located near Siandang Jerudong.”
The festival aims to strengthen the bond between the three participating communities and to preserve the cultural heritage of the Kedayan people. It also seeks to introduce the Makan Tahun tradition to a wider audience and ensure its relevance in modern times. Following the launch, the guest of honour toured the exhibition and took part in making kueh sumboi. – James Kon
