An Indonesian woman who had overstayed by over 3,000 days was sentenced to eight months’ jail and ordered to settle a BND1,000 fine by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Karni, 47, is serving nine months’ jail as she confirmed not being able to pay the fine.
The defendant pleaded guilty to the charge before Senior Magistrate Azrimah Abdul Rahman and admitted to Immigration prosecutor Adi Yusra bin Haji Adanan’s facts of the case.
A team of Immigration enforcement officers conducted an operation where they found the defendant and arrested her on inspecting her documents at 11.01am on May 6 at a place in Jalan McArthur in the capital.
Investigations unearthed that the defendant first came to the country in September 2013 under a sponsorship to work as a domestic helper.
The pass was valid up until December 2014. Before she could complete her tenure, the defendant reportedly ran away in August 2014 and has not been located ever since.
Immigration records neither showed any extensions to the defendant’s pass, nor had she made efforts to make her stay legal.
It was also revealed that the defendant had been renting a place on her own while offering cleaning and maid services on a freelance basis for a living.
The court was also informed that the defendant is a widower with five children.
