A 40-year-old Indonesian maid was sentenced to serve eight months’ jail for stealing jewellery from her employer.
Despite pleading guilty at the first opportunity on Thursday, Magistrate Nur Eleana binti Dato Seri Paduka Haji Hairol Arni saw the aggravation in Nia Kurniawati’s actions causing inconvenience to her employer in the search for the jewellery which she had hidden.
Prosecutor Ahmad Firdaus bin Mohammad revealed in court that the defendant was working in the family home in Jalan Sungai Tampoi, Kampong Sengkurong ‘A’ on May 5 when she came across a container full of pins but zeroed-in on two white gold rings, and took them.
She kept them and left the house at the end of her workday.
The owner realised that the rings were missing the same day and called the defendant to ask only to get a reply she was not aware of it.
The owner continued looking for the missing rings for about a month before filing a police report. This led to the defendant’s arrest and the recovery of the rings worth BND3,500. – Fadley Faisal
