A local woman was ordered by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday to settle a BND56,390 fine after she pleaded guilty to possessing smuggled cigarettes.
Zarinah binti Mahmud would have to serve 15 months’ jail in default of payment of the fine.
Magistrate Syarifah Nur Baqiyah binti Malai Shahran heard from the customs prosecutor that the defendant was arrested on January 21, 2021, during an operation conducted by the Enforcement Division of the Royal Customs and Excise Department at a residence in the RPN Kampong Mengkubau area.
Zarinah was found possessing 53 cartons and 36 packets of cigarettes.
All seized items, including the cigarettes, were ordered forfeited to the state and destroyed. – Fadley Faisal
