    Local trail runners secure podium finishes in Malaysia ultra trail tournament

    Over 200 trail running enthusiasts participated in the Kokol Ultra 2023 tournament in Menggatal, in Sabah, Malaysia last Saturday.

    The event, organised by Ultraspire and supported by Tourism Malaysia, saw several local runners secured podium finishes, showcasing their grit and determination in the terrains of Menggatal.

    With three distinct trail route categories, participants may choose from 15 kilometres (km), 30km, and 50km courses, each presenting its own set of challenges. Amitboy secured second place in the men’s veteran 15km category after registering a time of 1:41:08 followed by Azman HA in third with the time of 1:47:11.

    Meanwhile, Firdaus Ismail finished second in the male’s open 30km category after registering a time of 4:31:29.

    “I studied the route beforehand and saw that after 21km it’s nice with a big downhill. The final descent towards the finishing line was all about playing with gravity and body weight,” said Firdaus.Haji Jairuddin bin Haji Mohd secured silver in the male’s open 30km veteran category after registering a time of 4:51:42.

    The men’s 50km veteran category, saw Haji Hassam bin Haji Kamis and Kassim bin Haji Ibrahim securing second and third after registering a time of 8:29:51 and 9:07:11 respectively.

    Meanwhile, Zahara binti Haji Karia won bronze in the female’s 50km veteran category after registering a time of 11:50:21.
