Politeknik Brunei (PB) is sending a team to compete in the Shell Eco-Marathon ASIA 2024 which is set to take place at Pertamina Mandalika International Street Circuit, Lombok, Indonesia from July 2-6.
The Shell Eco-marathon ASIA is a unique competition that challenges students to design, build and drive the most energy-efficient prototype vehicle. Student-led teams take their innovations to the track to see who goes furthest on the least amount of energy or fuel which supports energy efficiency.
PB is gearing up for the Shell Eco-Marathon ASIA 2024 with their Yakin IV-R. This iteration promises to incorporate the lessons learned from previous years, with significant improvements in both mechanical and electrical systems aimed at maximising efficiency.
“We aim to showcase the potential of electric vehicles as a viable alternative to conventional transportation methods, promoting environmental sustainability and reducing carbon emissions,” said team leader Mohammad Fathul Izazi bin Haji Abidin
He added, “Through pushing the boundaries of technology and engineering, we hope to inspire the next generation of innovators and change-makers.”
PB has been an active participant in the Shell Eco-Marathon ASIA since 2017, consistently demonstrating excellence in engineering and sustainable design.
After a hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team, known as ‘Yakin IV-R’, will once again compete in the battery electric vehicle category this year, reflecting PB’s commitment to advancing electric vehicle technology and fostering a greener future.
In 2019, Team Yakin III from PB participated in the Shell Eco-Marathon ASIA in Malaysia, surpassing both their own and Brunei’s national records with a fuel efficiency of 252 km/kWh. The team achieved eighth place out of 22 teams in the region’s prototype (battery electric) category.
The global pandemic in 2020 and 2021 necessitated a shift to virtual competitions, where PB’s Yakin IV received an honourable mention for vehicle design. – James Kon
