An employee at a local company was left traumatised after she was scammed to buy iTunes cards worth BND1,000 and almost BND30,000 on Tuesday.
The employee, who whished to remain anonymous told the Borneo Bulletin, “I received a message late Tuesday afternoon from a scammer pretending to be the general manager of the company where I work.
“The number was an overseas number and had my general manager’s picture for the profile picture. Since the general manager is a foreigner, I thought it was her overseas contact number. The scammer knew my name and addressed me correctly in the message.”
She added, “The scammer posing as the general manager requested me to purchase 10 iTunes cards urgently as gifts to other executives as she was busy at a meeting.
“Coincidentally, my general manager was also at a meeting at that time. Thinking I was assisting my general manager, I purchased the cards from a local store.
“After I purchased 10 cards each worth BND100, the scammer asked me to send the serial numbers, which I did. The scammer asked for another 27 iTunes cards. As the store was closed, the scammer demanded that she makes the purchase first thing in the morning.”
The victim said she saw the general manager the next day and passed the receipt to claim her money back.
“The general manager was shocked and said that she never asked me to purchase any iTunes cards. I then realised that I had been scammed”.
She added, “My world fell apart after finding out what have happened. I reported the incident to the Royal Brunei Police Force for further action.” – James Kon
