Local referees certified by FIFA had been appointed to officiate matches in the international level such as AFC Cup despite the absence of competitions in the country due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

President of Brunei Darussalam Football Referee Association (PPNBD) Haji Hamidon bin Md Zain said this in his welcoming remarks during a Hari Raya gathering hosted by the association last week.

He said, “The Brunei Darussalam Football Referee Association conveyed gratitude to the Football Association of Brunei Darussalam (FABD) in providing support and continuous support such as bringing in expertise from overseas and improving the quality of refereeing in the country.”

The president touched on the role of PPBD in providing cooperation to FABD to together assist in the development of referees in the country.

He highlighted that the abandonment of domestic leagues organised by the FABD owing to COVID-19 restrictions impacted the referees’ association.

“Nevertheless, local referees still carry out fitness training twice a week on Fridays and Sundays while there are also elite referees certified by FIFA that train more than twice-a-week.”

Speaking on recent activities, fitness training had been carried out in accordance with the standard operating procedures (SOPs) outlined by the Ministry of Health (MoH).
