Local players dominate chess tournament

Brunei-Muara District Chess Championship executive committee collaborated with Brunei Chess Federation (BCF) to organise a chess tournament recently.

The tournament, held at the BCF Centre at Hassanal Bolkiah National Sports Complex and at the Midvalley Shopping Centre was organised in conjunction with His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu’izzaddin Waddaulah ibni Al-Marhum Sultan Haji Omar ‘Ali Saifuddien Sa’adul Khairi Waddien, Sultan and Yang Di-Pertuan of Brunei Darussalam’s 77th birthday celebrations.

The tournament was held in three formats – classical, rapid and blitz, which saw players from Malaysia, the Philippines, India, Australia and Hungary competing.

International Chess Federation (FIDE) Master Muhammad Aliuddin bin Haji Azahari won the classical and blitz format, while Israel Dacpano from the Philippines won the rapid format.

Meanwhile, Ahmad Akmal was named as the best under-20 player and Muhammad Danish Zaqwan Humaidi bin Muhd Hadi was named as the best under-16 player for the classical format.

For the blitz format, Ray Kakuta emerged as the best under-20 player and Muhammad Danish Zaqwan Humaidi was named as the best under-16 player, while Aiden Syahmi bin Zabri was named as the best under-14 player.

Meanwhile, Pengiran Anak Puteri Hajah Rashidah Sa’adatul Bolkiah Secondary School was named the best under-18 performing school, while International School Brunei was named the best under-14 school.

Australia High Commissioner to Brunei Darussalam Luke Arnold attended the tournament and presented the prizes.
