Local OCR star Shahril secures 2nd place in Spartan Series

Local obstacle course racing (OCR) competitor Shahril Muin made Brunei proud by securing second place in the overall age group championship for the 45-49 category in the 2024 Spartan South ASEAN Series.

Shahril shared joint second with Norlito Enriquez of the Philippines, behind winner Nathan Raward of the United Kingdom and ahead of Franklin Pennell of the United States in third place.

This achievement marks a significant milestone for Shahril, who previously won silver and bronze in the Spartan Ultra Trifecta Weekend at Timberland Heights in the Philippines in November 2022. Entering the last leg of the series in second place with 32 points, Shahril showed remarkable consistency, also ranking fourth in his age group at the Spartan Singapore finale.

The South ASEAN Series, which concluded recently, spanned three countries: Malaysia, Indonesia, and Singapore. Only racers participating in more than one event were eligible for the age group championship, which follows a ranking system based on overall performance.

Ariff Majid, President of Team Aroo—a local club dedicated to fitness and obstacle course racing—praised Shahril’s dedication and discipline. “Dida (Shahril Muin) has always been an inspiration to me and to us all,” said Ariff, who is also an OCR competitor. “He truly exemplifies that if you really want something, there is no excuse.”

Ariff added, “I hope to follow in his footsteps and help educate and inspire countless others.”
