Local man lands 16 months in jail for trespass

A 41-year-old man was sentenced to 16 months’ imprisonment by Magistrate Sharifah Nur Baqiyah binti Malai Shahran after he pleaded guilty to house trespass at the Female Residential College of Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) on October 8.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Abdul Musawwir bin Haji Mahli revealed that Mohammad Saiful Rizal bin Haji Ismail entered the restricted area at around noon on the day of the incident.

He posed as a maintenance officer, entering two rooms under false pretenses and taking photographs.

The tenants of the rooms, identified as tenant ‘A’ and tenant ‘B’, became suspicious as they had not been informed of any scheduled maintenance work. After alerting the building’s health, safety, security and environment officer, CCTV footage confirmed Mohammad Saiful Rizal’s unauthorised entry, leading to a police report being lodged.

The defendant admitted to the crime during the investigation and was identified on CCTV wearing a green uniform from a maintenance company he previously worked for.

The court also heard that the defendant had multiple prior convictions for property-related offences dating back to 2006. – Fadley Faisal
