Local man jailed 16 months for theft

A 33-year-old local man was sentenced by the Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday to 16 months in prison for stealing a fibreglass boat and its engine from a house in Kampong Sungai Matan, Jalan Kota Batu.

Nurul Furqan bin Awang Morshidi had previously entered a guilty plea to the charge. Magistrate Hajah Normazdina binti Haji Md Maskub presided over the sentencing.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Abdul Musawwir bin Haji Mahli outlined that the theft occurred between the evening of August 8 and the morning of August 9. Nurul Furqan, along with two accomplices, took a fibreglass boat and a 15-horsepower engine, with a combined value of BND7,000.

The court heard that the defendant and his accomplices were fishing near Kampong Pelambaian when they spotted the unattended boat tied to a house. Acting on a shared plan, Nurul Furqan and one accomplice untied the boat and transported it to Kampong Setia B. Nurul Furqan later confessed to selling the boat’s engine for BND350, receiving BND100 from the transaction, while his accomplices divided the remaining proceeds.

Investigations led to the arrest of the defendant, and only the boat was recovered, with the engine still missing. The court was informed of Nurul Furqan’s history of multiple property-related offences, which was taken into consideration during sentencing.
