The Magistrate’s Court yesterday handed an eight months’ jail sentence to a 51-year-old local for committing theft in a building.

Magistrate Syaffina binti Shahif found Haji Azamain bin Haji Jumat @ Haji Yahya’s action in committing the offence of theft in a building to be aggravated as it was premeditated and that he holds previous theft records. Prosecutor Ahmad Firdaus bin Mohammad revealed in court that the defendant had gone to a supermarket in Jalan Lumapas, Kampong Kilugus at 8am on February 24 to buy a drink.

He entered the supermarket, took a drink and went to the cashier to pay for it when he saw a mobile phone, which was the supermarket’s company phone, left on the cashier’s desk. He then struck up a plan to steal the mobile phone.

The defendant approached the counter, placed his own mobile phone on top of the company’s mobile phone and slid it off the desk slowly to put them into his trousers pocket. He then paid for his drink and left the supermarket.

The cashier later realised that the mobile phone had gone missing and looked through the CCTV which caught footage of the defendant taking it.

The cashier lodged a police report along with the CCTV footage which led to the defendant’s arrest and the recovery of the mobile phone worth over BND200.
