A 25-year-old local, who possessed smuggled cigarettes, was ordered to settle a BND8,008 fine by the Magistrate’s Court yesterday.
Magistrate Nur Eleana binti Dato Seri Paduka Haji Hairol Arni handed down the sentence to Pengiran Md Aabid Safwan bin Pengiran Wasli, who would have to serve eight months’ jail in default of payment after he pleaded guilty to illegal possession of 10 cartons and one packet of cigarettes in his vehicle.
The customs prosecutor informed the court that customs preventive officers stopped the defendant at Jalan Pasir Berakas and discovered the contraband during an inspection at 4.35pm on October 27, 2021.
Magistrate Nur Eleana also ordered the seized cigarettes to be destroyed.
