A local man was fined BND34,000 by the Magistrate’s Court for possessing smuggled cigarettes yesterday.
Ahmad bin Haji Othman, 63, would have to serve 14 months’ jail in default of payment.
Magistrate Abdul ‘Azim bin Othman heard from the customs prosecutor that the defendant was arrested at a house in RPN Kampong Rimba on November 22, 2022.
Officers discovered nine cartons and 71 packets of smuggled cigarettes in the defendant’s possession.
Officers also seized just under BND300 in cash from the defendant.
The court ordered the cigarettes destroyed and the cash forfeited to the state. – Fadley Faisal
