Local faces death penalty for drug trafficking

Prosecutors levelled charges against a drug trafficking suspect, including one carrying the death penalty.

Mohamad Sharifudin bin Haji Abdullah, 38, a local, faces a charge of trafficking 193.5 grammes (g) of pure methylamphetamine in 247.04g of crystals at a house in Jalan Mengkubok/Balingkawang, Teres RPN Kampong Lumut, Belait District on February 20.

The charge carries the death penalty as the alleged amount possessed is over 100g of methylamphetamine.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Nurul Fitri binti Kiprawi and Prosecutor Syafina binti Abdul Hadzid further pressed a possession charge against the defendant involving 8.19g of pure meth in 11.05g of crystals on the same occasion.

In the same transaction, the defendant is alleged to have consumed the drug.

He is also purported to possess a utensil for the consumption of the class ‘A’ drug.

The charges were finalised on July 8.

Magistrate Syaffina binti Shahif fixed November 22 and 23 for a preliminary inquiry to be heard on the case.
