The Brunei Council on Social Welfare (MKM) was awarded the sixth ASEAN Rural Development Poverty Eradication Leadership Award during a ceremony at the MBS Convention Centre in Singapore on Tuesday.
Receiving the award on behalf of MKM was its president Mohd Yusof bin Shaikh Abdul Halim from Singapore’s Social and Family Development Minister Masagos Zulkifli.
The award was given to the council as ASEAN’s recognition to a non-governmental organisation contributing to the rural community development to eradicate poverty in the region.
MKM President in his keynote speech, shared MKM’s achievements since its establishment during the 12th ASEAN Public Forum on the Rural Development Poverty Eradication on November 20.
He said since the council initiated the Breakfast Scheme Project for primary school students in 2014, the participating students are now sitting for the ‘O’ and ‘A’ level examinations as well as some undergoing undergraduate studies.
The president added that the students are among the children of MKM’s clients being assisted to free them from poverty, where one was announced as best student in ‘A’ Level two years ago.
“MKM’s best achievement is to maintain the public’s and donors’ trust, not only to be able to sustain and continue to carry out more projects for 14 years but also inspire to do better every year,” he said.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad and senior officers from the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports also attended.
The council’s delegation also included Vice President I Hajah Juhana binti Haji Mohd Jaya. – Lyna Mohamad
