Guerilla Artchitects Brunei (GA) members participated in the annual graffiti event organised by Diton King in Sunter, North Jakarta, Indonesia from September 16 to 17.
The ‘King Royal Pride 2023’ event featured nearly 1,000 artists showcasing their creative journey simultaneously, painting in their allotted areas for four consecutive days.
GA received an invitation from the spray paint brand producer along with distributors from Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines and Vietnam.
GA representative Madnycer said, “We are hoping that next year Brunei can also be part of the SprayAsia event.
“We were allocated with a wall space at the venue to paint and the evenings were filled with performances by local musicians like Tuan Tigabelas, Yacko, Mario Zwinkle, and Racun Kota.”
According to GA, graffiti art movement has shifted towards a more positive trajectory, shedding its historically negative association with vandalism.
“Today, graffiti and street art are gradually gaining acceptance within society, thanks to events like these that provide a valuable platform, particularly for young artists, to exhibit their talents,” added Madnycer.
Many artists have transformed the graffiti lifestyle into lucrative careers. Graffiti art has the ability to permeate various markets including clothing, fashion, design, illustration, murals and even fine art.
“It can be argued that the graffiti art movement is one of the most significant art movements in history,” said Madnycer. – Izah Azahari
