Litter bugs face the music

Some 28 individuals, including 13 citizens and a permanent resident, as well as two local companies were slapped with compound fines totalling BND5,900 between September and November for littering in public areas and pathways.

The violations were discovered during Operasi Bersih and routine operation by the Bandar Seri Begawan Municipal Department.

Offenders were advised to settle their fines within seven days. The failure to settle the compound fine will result in the case being brought to court.

Individuals found guilty of failing to settle the fine will face a fine between BND1,000 and BND3,000 for the first offence, and between BND3,000 and BND9,000, imprisonment of no more than six months, or both, for subsequent offences.

Meanwhile, any company found guilty will face a fine between BND2,000 and BND10,000 for the first offence, and between BND10,000 and BND30,000, imprisonment of no more than 12 months, or both, for subsequent offences.
