Visitors to parks in the capital expressed their frustration at the prevalence of litter cluttering popular spots for outings and activities.
Every morning, employees from the cleaning companies can be seen picking up litter and fishing out rubbish from the nearby river with nets from boats.
“The public really needs to appreciate what the public facilities and recreation parks that the government provided,” said one cleaner. “They should be a responsible citizens by making sure to throw away their rubbish in the provided bins instead of just leaving it around or throwing it into the river.”
“The rubbish just keeps coming,” the cleaner lamented.
One visitor said that the park used to be clean and beautiful, but unfortunately things have been getting worse.
“There’s rubbish visible to the eyes drifting along the river as well as some food containers lying around the rest areas provided,” she said.
Photos of rubbish have been going viral on social media, with blame being placed on cleaners not doing their jobs properly.
On the riverside of the Silver Jubilee Park, the public concern isn’t only on rubbish being an eyesore but that the unwanted debris could pose a safety hazard.
“With the amount of rubbish, it could be a good place for crocodiles to hide,” said one visitor, sharing that they have heard stories of the reptile being sighted.
Another visitor, Haji Ramli, said ”Countries like Singapore and Japan are among the exemplary countries that we could follow.
“Their authorities put up stringent law on having the public to jointly keep the public park clean and danger free,” he added. – Lyna Mohamad
