    Lion dance brings festive cheer

Some 120 students and 30 parents from Pusat Ehsan Al-Ameerah Al-Hajjah Maryam witnessed a lion dance performed by 15 members of the Unity Charity Association Lion Dance Troupe at the centre’s multi-purpose hall yesterday.

Executive Trustee of Pusat Ehsan Pengiran Datin Hajah Noraini binti Pengiran Dipa Negara Laila Diraja binti Pengiran Haji Abdul Momin with Secretary and Treasurer of the Management Committee Pauline Chew as well as staff attended the event.

The one-hour performance also saw the lion dance troupe performing to the music of Apt.

One of the young female members of the troupe Ruru Ong shared her passion of being involved in lion dance troupe. “I’ve developed interest since I was nine, drawing inspiration from my father, who was once in a lion dance troupe,” she said.

The 14-year-old from Paduka Seri Begawan Sultan Science College, whose role is in the rear of the lion dance, said, “It is not easy to be in the lion dance. It’s quite hot and tiring to perform one whole day under any weather. Today, I believe that our efforts and hardwork have paid off, as we were able to bring joy and excitement to the children here.”

Her advice for others, especially girls her age, who are interested to join a lion dance troupe is, “Give it a try and don’t be afraid. I hope to continue to be part of the troupe for many years to come.”  – James Kon
