Library Project aims to promote reading culture in schools

Nakhoda Abdul Rashid Menunggol Primary School, Cluster 2, was selected as the latest recipient of the Library Project, an initiative by students from the Centre for the Development of Gifted and Talented Education (EDGE) in collaboration with the Brunei Council on Social Welfare (MKM).

The community service initiative aims to promote the reading culture in Brunei by donating and distributing books to schools in need. Legislative Council member Yang Berhormat Chong Chin Yee officiated the handover ceremony at the school library.

Launched in 2022, the Library Project has grown significantly, engaging schools and local communities.

Books are collected from private and public donations, with drop-off points at locations such as SupaSave in Belait District and Ministry of Education offices.

The donated books cover a wide range of genres, including children’s literature, textbooks and novels, ensuring diverse content for recipients.

To date, MKM and EDGE students have conducted book donation drives for primary schools in Brunei-Muara and Ulu Belait districts, with Nakhoda Abdul Rashid Menunggol Primary School becoming the sixth school to benefit from the initiative.

EDGE, dedicated to providing quality gifted education programmes to maximise students’ potential, talents, and skills, continues to make a positive impact through this collaboration with MKM. – Lyna Mohamad
