Let’s choose home-cooking over eating out

Many of us enjoy eating out, and with food in Brunei being relatively affordable, it’s easy to make it a frequent habit.

However, a doctor I spoke with highlighted the benefits of eating home-cooked meals, emphasising that they are typically more nutritious and healthier compared to dining out.

He explained that restaurant food often relies on deep frying and contains high amounts of sugar, sauces, and other flavour enhancers to make it more appealing.

In contrast, home-cooked meals allow for better control over ingredients, making it easier to reduce unhealthy additives.

The doctor also advised incorporating plenty of greens into our diets and cutting back on starchy foods, noting that many of us tend to skip vegetables and overindulge in carbohydrates, which can lead to various health issues.

Additionally, he recommended regular exercise, even something as simple as a 30-minute walk, to maintain overall health.

While I believe it’s fine to eat out occasionally, such as for celebrations or social gatherings, making it a frequent habit can strain your finances and potentially harm your health.

Meals prepared at home by your mother, spouse, or loved ones are often healthier because we naturally use less oil, sugar, and sauces, and prioritise adding vegetables and greens – essential for healthy growth and well-being.

Let’s cultivate the habit of cooking and eating at home, and encourage our children to do the same for a healthier lifestyle.
