Lessons in struggle and sacrifice behind Hijrah, Imams say

Azlan Othman

As an event full of struggle and sacrifice, the Hijrah (migration) of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) serves as a source of inspiration for Muslims that will never be forgotten, Imams said in the Friday sermon yesterday.

“Hijrah is the historical migration of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) by the order of Allah the Almighty to save the ummah,” Imams said.

“The Hijrah of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and companions from Makkah Al-Mukarramah to Madinah Al-Munawwarah opened a historical chapter not only in Islam but also human civilisation in general.

“Hijrah refers to the migration of Muslims from a place that threatens their faith to another place to protect their religion.

“But there is also the migration of the spirit – the strive and struggle of the believer to enhance their faith, cleanse the heart, and deepen their knowledge of Islam. This is the Hijrah towards changing one’s condition to be closer to Allah the Almighty. As Muslims, this is the type of Hijrah that we must practise.”

The Imams also said we should not compromise in matters relating to our beliefs. Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) faced many temptations and threats to stop the spread of Islam, but he did not compromise.

Imams added that loyal, trustworthy and sincere companions can assist us in facing struggles or in dangerous situations.

“We must always seek blessings from Allah the Almighty. This is what happened at the historical Hijrah of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) who continuously recited Zikir and supplicated to gain protection with his companion, Sayyidina Abu Bakar,” Imams said.
