Speaker of the Legislative Council (LegCo) Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman bin Dato Setia Haji Mohamed Taib held courtesy calls and bilateral meetings with several officials: Speaker of the Singapore Parliament Seah Kian Peng, Speaker of the Malaysian Dewan Rakyat Yang Berhormat Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr) Johari bin Abdul and Speaker of the Thai House of Representatives Wan Muhamad Noor Matha.
The meetings aimed to strengthen diplomatic and parliamentary ties, as well as discuss issues of mutual interest at the regional level. During his meeting with Yang Berhormat Tan Sri Dato’ (Dr) Johari, Yang Berhormat Pehin Orang Kaya Seri Lela Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Abdul Rahman congratulated him on his appointment as President of the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly (AIPA) and on Malaysia’s role as host for the AIPA General Assembly in 2025. He also expressed the Sultanate’s readiness to fully support initiatives aimed at developing the younger generation, such as the Youth Parliament Programme and the Student Exchange Programme.
Both parties discussed the exchange of best practices for improving parliamentary functions.
In discussions with the Speakers from Singapore and Thailand, efforts to enhance regional connectivity and collaboration among ASEAN Parliaments were highlighted. The importance of reinforcing diplomatic relations was emphasised, particularly in areas like sustainable development, economic cooperation and social initiatives that benefit the region’s people.
The meetings reflect a mutual commitment to strengthening diplomatic relations and enhancing the role of Parliament in addressing regional challenges through dialogue and cooperation among ASEAN countries. – Lyna Mohamad
