Eleven Legislative Council (LegCo) members visited three agricultural sites in the Belait District to take a closer look at the latest development and achievements following support provided by the Ministry of Primary Resources and Tourism (MPRT).
The visit also showcased the modern agriculture system and techniques implemented in helping to raise productivity and production as well as interacting directly with the farmers. The visit also focused on locals becoming owners or having joint ventures with foreign businesses as well as employment opportunities for locals. The first visit was to Golden Chicks Livestock farm in Sungai Petai Agricultural Development Area (KKP).
The company, owned and operated by Haji Abdul Rahman bin Haji Metassim, Ong Chek Teng, Ong Chek Thiam and Ang Kin Hoo focuses on hens with the use of high-tech methods and a closed cage system to ensure high productivity.
The coops have a reported capacity of 34,000 chickens along with a controlled cage temperature and a better disease control system guaranteeing quality and quantity of fresh eggs that can meet the nation’s needs.
The visit continued to a 78.5-hectare WYWY Farm at KKP Merangking, managed by Liew Tai Khiun with 37 workers since 2019.
The farm is used to grow a variety of local fruits and vegetables, from durian to coconuts; which the LegCo members were able to sample.
The visit then moved to TS Wood Sdn Bhd at the Bukit Sawat Forest Reserve, Kampong Sungai Mau, Labi. The company played an active role in carrying out sustainable downstream timber processing and produced doors, door components, door frames, furniture components, wood moulding products, and veneers.
