LegCo member calls for delivery service to ease MPC congestion

A call was made to include door-to-door postal delivery service to ease congestion at the Mail Processing Centre (MPC) during the 20th session of the Legislative Council (LegCo) meeting yesterday.

LegCo member Yang Berhormat Zainol bin Mohamed added that such a service would not only improve the efficiency of postal service but also create job opportunities.

Minister of Transport and Infocommunications Yang Berhormat Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Shamhary bin Pengiran Dato Paduka Haji Mustapha in response said the processes of the MPC are currently being studied with a goal of streamlining the back-end system. At present, he said, the centre can only process mail from abroad after it has touched down on the Sultanate.

Once the mail has undergone x-ray screening by the Royal Customs and Excise Department, it will either be stamped with a green or red label.

He added that green-labelled parcels are delivered directly to customers’ homes, while the red ones can only be collected at the MPC as they require further inspection by customs personnel. – Rokiah Mahmud
