LegCo discuss welfare, poverty

Poverty alleviation and social welfare policies were brought up after LegCo member Yang Berhormat Haji Mohamad Danial @ Tekpin bin Ya’akub raised matters on economic challenges and quality of life at the 20th session of the Legislative Council meeting yesterday.

Minister of Religious Affairs Pehin Udana Khatib Dato Paduka Seri Setia Ustaz Haji Awang Badaruddin bin Pengarah Dato Paduka Haji Awang Othman and Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Dato Seri Setia Awang Haji Nazmi bin Haji Mohamad spoke on long-term strategies in addressing social inequality and the positive impact of government initiatives in reducing poverty.

Attention was drawn to the macro perspective, emphasising the role of economic growth in creating job opportunities and empowering marginalised communities to achieve self-sufficiency as well as emphasising the government’s commitment to providing assistance to those in need was underscored, with an emphasis on channelling support through the national welfare system.

The discussion also touched on the importance of skill development and entrepreneurship in enhancing economic mobility and reducing reliance on government assistance.

The need for tailored interventions and programmes to address the specific needs of recipients were also emphasised.

The session concluded with a call for greater transparency and accountability in welfare programmes, ensuring that assistance reaches those most in need and fosters meaningful socio-economic progress. – Fadley Faisal
