HONOLULU (AP) — Lava erupted from a volcano in Hawaii on Tuesday, shooting into the air in high fountains that were anticipated to increase in size during the intermittent eruption.
The eruption started on December 23 in a crater at the top of Kilauea, one of the globe’s most active volcanoes, located in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park on the Big Island.
Tuesday marked the 12th event of the eruption. What began in the morning with sporadic, small flows became continuous fountaining in the afternoon, the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory said. They reached 150 to 165 feet (45 to 60 metres) and were expected to grow.
A webcam showed a vigorous fountain of bright red lava.

No residential areas have been endangered by the eruption. Visitors have been gathering at lookout points within the park to witness the spectacular display.
The duration of each fountaining episode has ranged from a few hours to several days. The observatory reports that episodes have been divided by breaks ranging from under 24 hours to 12 days.
