Lao, Thai PMs discuss boosting economic ties in phone conversation

VIENTIANE (XINHUA) – Lao Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone on Monday congratulated Thai Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin on his appointment by telephone, and the two leaders held talks on further cementing Lao-Thai ties and cooperation.

During their talks by phone, the two heads of government reached consensus on continuing bilateral economic cooperation and creating an environment conducive to trade and investment cooperation, Lao National TV reported yesterday.

They agreed to work together to accelerate infrastructure development towards regional and sub-regional integration and connectivity. This includes the expansion of road networks, power grid integration, and rail connectivity.

The two prime ministers also pledged to continue cooperation in the clean energy sector and strive for energy security to meet the growing needs of industrial development.

Sonexay highlighted the long-standing friendly relations and cooperation between the two countries, adding that the two countries have elevated their relations to a strategic partnership for sustainable growth and development.

During the phone conversation, the new Thai prime minister expressed support for Laos’ presidency of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in 2024.

Srettha became the 30th prime minister of Thailand last week.
