    Labour Department uncovers employment violations

    Azlan Othman

The Labour Enforcement Division of the Labour Department conducted an operation on two companies in the Brunei-Muara District to ensure the Employment Order 2009 is adhered to by employers.

Dubbed Operasi Kelinga 63/2023 and Kelinga 64/2023, the first inspection was carried out at a grocery store in Kampong Tungku.

The employer was believed to have committed two offences under the Employment Order 2009 – violating the conditions of the licence to hire foreign workers by employing two foreign workers working as a labourer and a driver for the store.

The two employers were caught violating the conditions of the licence to hire foreign workers, where their foreign workers holding the position of labourers were found to driving trucks and delivering goods.

At the second location, also in Kampong Tungku, the employer was found to have violated the conditions of the licence to hire foreign workers with two foreign workers hired as labourers and as truck drivers.

For all offences, if convicted, the employer harbouring them may be subject to a fine of BND600 for the first offence and BND900 for the second offence.

For the third offence or failure to pay the compound fine, the employers will be brought to court.
