KUWAIT CITY (XINHUA) – An Emiri decree issued yesterday appointed Kuwait’s Prime Minister Sheikh Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah as deputy emir of the country, according to Kuwait’s state news agency.
Emir of Kuwait Sheikh Mishal Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah said in the decree that the appointment would remain valid until a new crown prince is named.
The decree also stipulates that the prime minister informs Kuwait’s National Assembly and that it takes effect once published in the official gazette.
Sheikh Mishal also issued another Emiri decree on the same day, assigning the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defence, and Acting Interior Minister Sheikh Fahad Yusuf Al-Sabah as prime minister.
Sheikh Mishal became Kuwait’s 17th ruler on December 20, 2023, succeeding his half-brother, Sheikh Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Jaber Al-Sabah, who passed away at the age of 86.
On the same day, he accepted the resignation of the former Cabinet, led by Sheikh Ahmad Nawaf Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, the son of the late emir.
The new emir appointed Sheikh Mohammad Sabah Al-Salem Al-Sabah as prime minister on January 4.
