Koi trade reopens between China and Japan

(ANN/THE JAPAN NEWS) -The Chinese government is reportedly set to lift its year-long suspension on imports of ornamental Nishikigoi carp, commonly known as Koi, from Japan.

The ban has been in place since November last year, following the release of treated water from the Tokyo Electric Power Company Holdings’ Fukushima No 1 nuclear plant.

In mid-October, China’s General Administration of Customs updated its website to approve six Japanese aquaculture facilities for export to China. These include four located in Niigata Prefecture, with one each in Fukuoka and Hiroshima Prefectures.

Previously, about a dozen Japanese aquaculture sites had been authorised for export to China, but their certifications expired by the end of October 2022, effectively halting imports.

According to Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries, Nishikigoi exports to China in 2022 reached JPY1.2 billion, marking a 57.6 per cent increase compared to the previous year. However, this figure dropped by 13.6 per cent in 2023, totalling JPY1.04 billion.
