The Immigration and National Registration Department (INRD), through its Law Enforcement Division, inspected 11 foreign nationals, detaining six of them during Operation Kabat 136/2024 targeting several houses and rental rooms in Mukim Kilanas recently.
The detainees were brought to the Law Enforcement Division for further investigation. The individuals are suspected of violating Section 15(1) of the Immigration Act, Chapter 17, for overstaying in Brunei Darussalam after their immigration permits were revoked. The INRD also reported bringing two individuals to court. The first case involved Apo Barman, a 37-year-old Bangladeshi male, who was sentenced to 10 months in prison and three whippings.
He pleaded guilty to entering Brunei without using a designated immigration checkpoint, staying in the country without valid immigration status, leaving Brunei without using a declared immigration checkpoint and overstaying. The charges followed an earlier arrest during Operation Kabat JIPK 91/2024 near the Sungai Tujuh Immigration Checkpoint in Kuala Belait.
The second case involved Suryani, a 57-year-old Indonesian male, who was sentenced to 12 months in prison and fined BND800 for overstaying in Brunei after his immigration pass expired. However, Suryani failed to pay the fine, resulting in an additional month of imprisonment. He was arrested during Operation Kabat JIPK 136/2024 at a construction site in Mukim Kilanas.
The INRD reminded the public to report any information regarding immigration offenders by contacting the department’s hotline at 8734888 / 8753888 (Bandar Seri Begawan) or 8984111 (Kuala Belait). – Fadley Faisal
