I’m writing this letter as a heartfelt and urgent plea to all parents: please do not bring your unwell children along for Raya visits.
A friend of mine recently shared a troubling experience – her three-month-old baby fell ill shortly after they hosted guests at their home. One of the visiting children had been visibly unwell, coughing and wiping her runny nose while running around the house.
When asked, the parents casually admitted that their daughter had been sick for several days but they brought her along because there was no one to look after her at home.
Frankly, I was shocked by such a careless and inconsiderate attitude. Parents should know better. If your child is unwell, the most responsible and compassionate thing to do is to stay home and care for them. At the very least, be mindful that your child’s presence could put others – especially vulnerable infants, the elderly or those with compromised immune systems – at serious risk of falling ill.
So, to all parents: please spare a thought for others during this festive season.
There is no joy in nursing a sick child or dealing with illness when we should be celebrating together in good health.
Let’s be considerate, stay safe, and protect one another – especially the most vulnerable among us.
Worried mum
