SEOUL (ANN/KOREA HERALD) – Korean beauty products have achieved a significant milestone in the global market, with exports surpassing USD10 billion for the first time in 2024.
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety reported on Monday that Korean cosmetics exports reached USD10.2 billion last year, marking a 20.6 per cent increase from USD8.46 billion in 2023. This milestone comes 12 years after exports first exceeded USD1 billion in 2012, demonstrating consistent growth despite a slowdown in 2022 and 2023. The previous record of USD9.2 billion was set in 2021.
Skincare leads the surge
Skincare products dominated exports, accounting for USD7.67 billion, followed by makeup products at USD1.35 billion and cleansing products at USD470 million. Cleansing products showed the highest growth, with a 30.7 per cent increase on-year.
China remained the largest importer of Korean cosmetics, accounting for 24.5 per cent of exports, or approximately USD2.5 billion. However, this represents a decline from 32.8 per cent in 2023. The United States followed with USD1.9 billion, marking a remarkable USD690 million increase (57 per cent on-year), while Japan took third place with USD1 billion, a 29.2 per cent increase on-year and the first time surpassing the USD1 billion mark.
