Junior karate exponents bag medals in KL

The Sultanate’s young karate exponents impressed in the regional scene after amassing a haul of two gold, three silver and three bronze medals during the 23rd Milo International Karate Do Championship at the Titiwangsa Stadium in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia recently.

Aunie Qaisara binti Mohd Nazri from the Shitokai Karate Association of Brunei Darussalam and Wan Azlee Khairi bin Wan Zuraimi from the Wadokai Karate Brunei Darussalam bagged gold in the girls’ individual kata for 10-11 years and boys’ individual kumite for 10-11 years.

The silver medallists are Wan Mohammad Rayyan Daniel bin Zayadi from the Wadokai Karate Brunei Darussalam in the boys’ individual kumite for 10-11 years (35kg), Awangku Mohd Abdul Qawi bin Pengiran Haji Zainal from the Wadokai Karate Brunei Darussalam in the male junior individual kumite for 16-17 years (under 76kg) and Adilah Nur Husnaa Syahmina binti Mohd Hassanal from the Shotokan Karate Brunei Darussalam in the youth under-14 individual kata for 12-13 years.

Meanwhile, trio Awangku Mohd Ammar Ar-Raziqin bin Pengiran Mohd Alli Isa Putera from Wadokai Karate Brunei Darussalam in the boys’ individual limited for 10-11 years (under-30kg), Aunie Qaisara in the girls’ individual kumite for 10-11 years and Adilah Nur Husnaa Syahmina in the youth under-14 individual kumite for 12-13 years (under-42kg) won bronze.

The competition aimed to enhance the performance of the young athletes by gaining experience from taking part at international level.

Team manager Haji Osmera bin Haji Othman said, “I am very proud of the performance of all the athletes and coaches representing the country for instilling high spirit and discipline in this event.”

He hopes that the achievements will spur young athletes with more passion and guidance in future local and overseas competitions.

The team manager also conveyed his gratitude to the Youth and Sports Department and the Brunei Darussalam Karate Federation (BRUKAF).

Thirty participants represented the country comprising clubs from Wadokai Karate Brunei Darussalam, Shotokan Karate Brunei Darussalam and Shitokai Karate Brunei Darussalam.

A total of 2,150 athletes from hosts Malaysia, Australia, Brunei, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Jordan, Nepal and Singapore took part in the three-day meet. – Fadhil Yunus
