The Land Transport Department (JPD) recently unveiled a revised policy on the Visible Light Transmission (VLT) rates for tinted glass and solar film installations on vehicles in Brunei. The updated guidelines aim to reduce heat and harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays from penetrating car windows and to minimise glare while driving.
Under the new policy, the permitted VLT rates are as follows:
- Front side windows: 50% VLT
- Rear side windows: 25% VLT
- Rear window: 25% VLT
- Front windscreen: 70% VLT (unchanged)
JPD stated that the revised policy is designed to offer vehicle owners more convenience and options regarding the use of tinted glass and solar film.
Starting August 1, 2024, vehicle owners can visit any JPD branch to obtain approval for installing tinted glass or solar film at the new VLT rates. Approvals for previous VLT rates remain valid, but owners wishing to switch to the new rates must reapply for approval and registration.
JPD emphasised that installing tinted glass or solar film with the new VLT rates without prior approval is an offense. Violators may face a compound fine of up to BND500. Additionally, the use of curtains and shades while driving is prohibited, with fines of up to BND500 for those convicted of this offense. – JAMES KON
