Some 550 cartons of cigarettes of various brands believed to have been smuggled into the country were seized by the Marine Police Special Operations Unit, Operations Department of the Royal Brunei Police Force (RBPF) and Royal Customs and Excise Department during a joint operation in the area of Brunei-Muara’s waterways on Friday.

According to the RBPF, a suspicious boat was spotted passing through the operation area and tried to escape capture.

A search was immediately launched in the vicinity and authorities found several packages on the bank of Sungai Teritip, Kampong Mentiri.

The seized contraband was handed over to the Royal Customs and Excise Department for further investigation.

The RBPF will continue to patrol border areas to curb criminal activities.

The public is urged to cooperate and provide information on illegal activities by calling the police hotline 993 or visit a nearby police station.
