The Ministry of Culture Youth and Sports (MCYS), through the Community Development Department (JAPEM) and Bank Islam Brunei Darussalam Berhad (BIBD), signed an agreement for an orphan scholarship programme yesterday.
Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin witnessed the signing at CIP Lounge, Level 1 of Hassanal Bolkiah National Stadium.
Permanent Secretary (Community and Culture) at the MCYS Hajah Nor Ashikin binti Haji Johari and Acting Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of BIBD Berhad Hajah Noraini binti Haji Sulaiman signed the agreement on behalf of the two parties.
The scholarship programme will be funded by JAPEM’s Orphans Fund raised from the public and channelled to selected orphans through BIBD Advocating Life-long Learning for an Aspiring Future (ALAF) Programme.
Two orphans will be selected each year to participate in the BIBD ALAF Programme.
For the ninth session of 2021/2022, Year 7 student at Pengiran Isteri Hajjah Mariam Secondary School Norhayati binti Abdullah Ahmad and Year 7 student at Masin Secondary School Mohammad Noorshahadahriyaan bin Shahrin were the recipients.
The scholarship is one of the government’s initiatives to help BIBD ALAF Programme participants succeed in their studies to improve the standard of living of the household and get off the poverty cycle.
