MANILA (XINHUA) – Two people were killed and 22 others injured after a jeepney crashed into a roadside tree in Batangas province, south of Manila, police said yesterday.

Police said the accident happened at 4.45pm local time on Saturday when the driver lost control of the vehicle while negotiating a descending curve in Lobo town.

The 54-year-old male driver and a 52-year-old male passenger died while being transported to a local hospital, police added.

The passengers were heading home from a beach resort when the accident happened, police said.

The elongated, flatbed passenger jeepney is the most popular mode of public transport in the Philippines. Government data showed that around 160,000 jeepneys are running across the country.
