Japan’s Olympic hopeful caught, exits team

ANN/THE YOMIURI SHIMBUN – A source from the Japanese Olympic team revealed that the captain of Japan’s women’s gymnastics team for the Paris Olympics, Shoko Miyata, 19, has left the national squad.

The Japan Gymnastics Association announced on Friday that Miyata had been caught smoking and drinking alcohol in the accommodation building of the National Training Centre in Tokyo during June and July, which violated the Japan Olympic Committee’s regulations and the association’s code of conduct.

Consequently, Miyata will not participate in the Paris Olympic events.

The gymnastics team is currently in Monaco for final training ahead of the Games.

The 19-year-old gymnast won a bronze medal in the balance beam event at the 2022 World Championships and secured her third consecutive victory at the NHK Trophy in May. She was anticipated to be the national team’s star at the Paris Games.
