Japanese experts share patent, trademark knowledge

Officials from the Japan External Trade Organization (JETRO) recently conducted training sessions for Brunei Intellectual Property Office (BruIPO) officers.

Director at the Intellectual Property Department of JETRO Singapore Kenji Mihara and Deputy Director at the Intellectual Property Department of JETRO Bangkok Takuro Ishido conducted the training on patents and trademarks for trainees from BruIPO, Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD), Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) and Entrepreneurship Innovation Center (EIC) of the Ministry of Education.

Supported by the Economic Research Institute for ASEAN and East Asia (ERIA), the training was held in response to a discussion on bilateral cooperation between BruIPO and Japan Patent Office (JPO) in May. A proposal was tabled for lecturers to travel to Brunei for training on intellectual property (IP).

The two-day training started on October 2, with Mihara, who has experience in patent examination, served as a lecturer while Ishido provided logistical support for the training on patent substantial examination practices.

The lecture included patent examination procedures, patent requirements, drafting practice using case studies and how to check the examination results of other IP offices.

Staff members from UBD, UNISSA, and EIC were invited to assist BruIPO officers in understanding the technical content, with a future view for knowledgeable officers to act as supporting staff or examiners in the future. – James Kon
