Jail, caning for tourist turned fugitive

A Filipino man was sentenced to four months’ jail and three whippings yesterday, after pleading guilty to overstaying.

Alvin Jules Abaya, 48, has been on the run for over 1,000 days and earned a living by working as a cleaner at a cemetery on a freelance basis, immigration prosecutor Adi Yusra Adanan revealed.

On August 8, the defendant went to the immigration to sort out his pass which had expired on February 25, 2020.

His case was transferred to the enforcement section leading to his detention.

Senior Magistrate Harnita Zelda Skinner also learnt that the defendant first entered the country on a social visit in April 2019, and extended his pass from time to time, up until the last expiry date. – Fadley Faisal
