Islamic university leaders gather in Brunei for annual general meeting

Universiti Islam Sultan Sharif Ali (UNISSA) hosted the 13th annual general meeting of Asian Islamic Universities Association (AIUA) at the Indera Samudra Grand Hall, The Empire Brunei on Monday.

The meeting chaired by AIUA President Professor Dr Mujiburrahman, who is also Rector of Universitas Islam Negeri Antasari, Banjarmasin, Indonesia, was attended by over 40 university leaders who are AIUA members from Indonesia, Malaysia, Cambodia, Thailand and Brunei Darussalam.

UNISSA Rector cum AIUA Deputy President Dr Haji Norarfan bin Haji Zainal was also present.

The annual general meeting was held to build cooperation framework among universities in the Asian region and national level besides promoting Islamic education through universities involved.

AIUA was set up in 2015 to strengthen ties among higher institutions in Asia towards attaining excellence in education, research and services through holistic Islamic approach.

AIUA is also hoped to be a hub and a medium of discussion for academic and university development as a whole, including opening up opportunities for students and academic workforce in conducting various projects and culture among AIUA members.

Before the annual general meeting, AIUA held several activities including a workshop on managing outbound and inbound student mobility programme in Krabi, Thailand last February.

The general meeting this year was also highlighted with the International Conference of Islamic Universities (ICIU) 2023 held at The Empire Brunei on Monday and Tuesday.

ICIU was held following from the 12th roundtable discussion of AIUA general meeting in Universitas Islam Negeri Antasari depicting concerns by AIUA on current Islamic education climate at higher institutions in the region in facing challenges in the 21st Century. – Azlan Othman
