In facing challenges in this complex era and uncertainties of the modern world, religion has played a significant role. Islamic solidarity and social unity have been able to disseminate harmony and unity in the community.

Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Haji Mohd Tashim bin Pengiran Haji Hassan said this in his speech at the Southeast Asia Ulama Seminar 2022 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.

The deputy minister added that COVID-19 has changed the world landscape and introduced the society to new norms.

“As a country and a community, we have been tested by the COVID-19 pandemic. But it is evident that unity has played a significant role in facing the challenges of which cooperation between countries, including all levels of community, regardless of their race and religion has stood together to assist each other amid the crises,” he added.

Pengiran Dato Seri Setia Haji Mohd Tashim said that enabling citizens to lead a normal life is one of main priorities of the Sultanate’s approach, particularly in planning and implementing policies at all ministries including the Ministry of Religious Affairs.

“Such an approach reduces and prevents radical changes and elements,” he said.

He added that comprehensive planning and action to address extremism and terrorism are vital. Brunei Darussalam through MoRA included religious education and sustainable religious services as part of its pivot towards facing extremism and terrorism.

“In facing such challenges due to politics and world hardship, Brunei Darussalam along with the international community are putting efforts into fighting these activities,” the deputy minister said.

The Southeast Asia Ulama Seminar 2022 themed ‘Ummah’s Unity’ was organised by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) and Minister’s Office of the Prime Minister’s Office (Religious Affairs), Malaysia in collaboration with the Muslim World League.

The seminar gathered 44 religious preachers from 17 countries and was officiated by Malaysian Prime Minister Dato’ Sri Ismail Sabri bin Yaakob.
