IPv6 adoption hits 72.7pc in China

BEIJING (ANN/CHINA DAILY) – As of May 2024, China had 794 million active users of Internet Protocol version 6 (IPv6), representing 72.7 per cent of its total internet user base, according to a recently released white paper.

The white paper, highlighting the development status of China’s IPv6 technology, was unveiled during the third conference on China’s innovation and development of IPv6 technology.

This event was organised by the China Academy of Information and Communications Technology, a Beijing-based think tank, and concluded in Beijing on Monday.

Wu Jianping, an academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, emphasised that IPv6 technology is a crucial component of future cyberspace infrastructure. He noted that the framework is a key technology for the innovation and development of IPv6.

Wang Song, vice-minister of the Cyberspace Administration of China, provided detailed statistics on IPv6 usage: 64.56 per cent of traffic in mobile networks, 21.21 per cent in fixed networks, over 50 per cent support rate for home wireless routers, and a 96.01 per cent support rate among 8,049 key industry websites.

IPv6, known as the next-generation internet protocol, offers a vast array of IP address resources for internet users.

It also serves as a backbone for supporting network capabilities, including big data, cloud computing, enhancing the digital economy, industrial upgrading, and providing better and more secure user experiences, Wang added.

Wu Hequan, another academician at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, remarked that with the rapid development of artificial intelligence technology, IPv6+ should continue to innovate.
